The Principal Conductor for events at Deer Valley Music Festival is Conner Gray Covington. Beginning his third season with the Utah Symphony as Associate Conductor and was recently named Principal Conductor of the Deer Valley Music Festival, the summer home of the Utah Symphony. This season, he makes his subscription debut with the Utah Symphony and also conducts a gala performance with Joshua Bell. During his tenure in Utah so far, Covington has conducted nearly 200 performances of classical, education, film, pops, and family concerts as well as tours throughout the state. Previously, he was as the Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he worked closely with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and the Curtis Opera Theater while also being mentored by Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Covington has also worked as a guest conductor with the symphonies of St. Louis, Utah, Virginia, Portland (ME), Monterey (CA), and the Oregon Mozart Players, and in the 2019-2020 season he will make debuts with the North Carolina Symphony and the Reno Chamber Orchestra as well as a return engagement with the Kansas City Symphony. He has served as a cover conductor for the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Pittsburgh Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, The Florentine Opera Company (Milwaukee, WI), and the Britt Festival Orchestra (Jacksonville, OR).

Utah Symphony Orchestra
Founded in 1940, the Utah Symphony performs more than 175 concerts each season and offers all Utahns easy access to world-class live musical performances of the world’s greatest music in the state’s top venues. Since being named the orchestra’s seventh music director in 2009, Thierry Fischer has attracted leading musicians and top soloists, refreshed programming, drawn increased audiences, and galvanized community support. In addition to numerous regional and domestic tours, including the Mighty 5 Tour of Utah’s national parks, the Utah Symphony has embarked on seven international tours and performed at Carnegie Hall in Spring 2016 coinciding with the orchestra’s 75th anniversary celebrations. The Utah Symphony has released more than 100 recordings, including Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in Fall 2017, Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (2015) and Dawn to Dust (2016), which features three Utah Symphony-commissioned works by Nico Muhly, Andrew Norman, and Augusta Read Thomas.
Utah Opera, the orchestra’s parent organization, reaches 450,000 residents in Utah and the Intermountain region, with educational outreach programs serving around 75,000 students annually. In addition to performances in its home in Salt Lake City, Abravanel Hall, and concerts throughout the state of Utah, the Utah Symphony participates in Utah Opera’s four annual productions at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre and presents the six-week Deer Valley Music Festival each summer in Park City, Utah. With its many subscription, education, and outreach concerts and tours, the Utah Symphony is one of the most engaged orchestras in the nation.

“Set in the stunning St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Park City, the Deer Valley Music Festival with the Utah Symphony presented the absolutely delightful Schumann Cello Concerto. The concert was the perfect mix of pieces, marking itself as the ideal classical symphony for this summer. St. Mary’s warm golden lights,, flickering candles, and pale wood walls is a beautiful setting that seems to glow as the sun sets and creates a golden haze that highlights the cool colors of the many intricate stained glass windows. The concert, played beneath the outstretched arms of the elevated crucifix, truly transported the audience into one the old European cathedrals in an era when what is considered classic music was new to listeners.”

“The Deer Valley Music Festival in Park City, Utah presented on a one-night-only Disney in Concert at the Snow Park Outdoor Amphitheater, featuring four incredible soloists and the always amazing Utah Symphony. Set on the slopes of Deer Valley, the concert had a refreshingly casual feel, which made audience members of all ages feel welcome and excited about the concert. The program included music from lyricists and composers from Alan Menken to Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. When the orchestra began to tune their instruments, instead of a quiet hush, an excited babble broke out among all the little kids present. While tuning might seem a regular part of the symphony to adults, for the kids it was just the beginning of the magic.”
