Michael Franti & Spearhead is a prolific touring act that emerged in 1994. Frontman Michael Franti formed the band after his stint with previous bands the Beatnigs and Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. He formed Michael Franti & Spearhead and released their debut album, Home. Franti’s music infuses various genres, such as hip-hop, jazz, reggae, funk, and soul. His lyrics were primarily politically charged and spoke about injustice. Home performed well internationally, entering the charts in Austria, Belgium, New Zealand, and the U.K. In the U.S., the record entered the Heatseekers chart, peaking at number 21.

The band’s subsequent releases consistently performed well around the globe. In 2006, Franti released his first breakthrough into the U.S. chart. Yell Fire! entered Billboard 200 at 125 and Top Independent Albums at 6. Two years later, Franti soared to number 39 on the Billboard 200 with All Rebel Rockers. The 2008 effort featured “Obama Song” and “Say Hey (I Love You).”

In 2010, Franti released his first number single, “The Sound of Sunshine.” The song topped the Adult Alternative Airplay (AAA) chart and entered the Adult Top 40 and Rock Songs charts. The single earned platinum status in Italy after a version featuring Jovanotti was released in 2011. Franti’s latest album, Work Hard & Be Nice, was released in 2020. The album features the number 1 AAA hit, “I Got You,” and AAA contenders “Work Hard and Be Nice” and “Good Day for a Good Day.”
